WRP Annual Highlights - 2018

Background: Waste Reduction Partners, a team of 40 staff and retired engineers and scientists, helps NC businesses and institutions improve environmental and energy management through on-site assessments that help save money. WRP is a NCDEQ partnership program with the Land of Sky Regional Council which has provided over 276,000 hours of field technical assistance since 2000 with 12,032 hours in FY2018.

Promoting the State’s Pollution Prevention Pays Ethic. In FY2018, the Waste Reduction Partners team provided on-site waste reductions and energy effiency assessments for 159 clients across 51 counties, helping businesses and institutions save $2.38 million. (Since 2000, the WRP program has served 2,806 organizations with on-site assistance to improve environmental performance while helping these customers achieve $137 million in accumulative utility cost savings.)

  • Climate: Greenhouse Gas Reductions though Energy Efficiency: The WRP energy team delivered energy efficiency assess¬ments and management guidance to 67 businesses and organizations across the state last year. WRP engineers identified hundreds of energy conservation measures (ECMs) for these clients, documenting each in a detailed report with a cost/benefit analysis.
  • WRP estimates that these clients will implement mea¬sures to save $1,882,000 per year in en-ergy utility costs, reduce energy use by 113,750 million Btu, and cut related carbon emissions by 4,528 metric tons per year. (603,733 MTCO2e accumulative reduced since 2000)

  • On-site Waste Reduction Assistance: The WRP solid waste team worked with 67 entities during the year, which includ¬ed a wide range of NC manufacturers, retail, food services, local governments, schools, farms and nurseries. The on-site assistance resulted in the diversion of more than 6,743 tons from landfilling. The disposal management savings and material revenues are estimated at $269,000 for the year.

  • Water Efficiency Demand-Side Management: During last year, WRP engineers completed 22 water efficiency assessments for large water customers with the City of Asheville and various water utilities in the Triangle region which helped clients achieve water efficiency savings of 6.7 million gallons per year.

Waste Reduction Partners – Annual Highlights - 2017

Waste Reduction Partners, a team of 40 staff and retired engineers and scientists, helps NC businesses and institutions improve environmental and energy management through on-site assessments that help save money. WRP is NCDEQ partnership program with the Land of Sky Regional Council which as provided over 264,000 hours of technical assistance since 2000 with 11,895 hours in FY2017.

Promoting the State’s Pollution Prevention Pays Ethic  In FY2017, the Waste Reduction Partners team provided on-site waste reductions and energy effiency assessments for 164 clients across 45 counties, helping businesses and institution save $1.54 Million. (Since 2000, the WRP program has served 2,647 organization with on-site assistance to improve environmental performance while helping these customers achieve $115 million in accumulative utility cost savings.)

Promote Greenhouse Gas Reductions though On-site Energy Efficiency  The WRP energy team delivered energy efficiency assess¬ments and management guidance to 58 businesses and organizations across the state last year. WRP engineers identified hundreds of energy conservation measures (ECMs) for these clients, documenting each in a detailed report with a cost/benefit analysis.

  • WRP estimates that these clients will implement measures to save $1,055,000 per year in energy utility costs, reduce energy use by 40,795 million Btu, and cut related carbon emissions by 4,537 metric tons per year. (627,282 MTCO2e accumulative reduced since 2000)

On-site Waste Reduction Assistance  The WRP solid waste team worked with 86 entities during the year, which included a wide range of NC manufacturers, retail, food services, local governments, schools, farms and nurseries. The on-site assistance resulted in the diversion of more than 6,161 tons from landfilling. The disposal management savings and material revenues, are estimated at $363,000 for the year.

Water Efficiency Demand-Side Management  During last year, WRP engineers provided 15 water efficiency assessments for large water customers with the City of Asheville and various water utilities in the Triangle region.

  • A demand-side management pilot program for the Industrial/Commercial/Institutional (ICI) sectors was launched with the City of Durham, OWASA, and Town of Cary water utilities. Thus far, the on-site water efficiency assessments have been provide for a university, a college, K-12 schools, hotels, a machinery manufacturer, and a brewery. In 2017, these audits saved water cus¬tomers 5,045,400 gallons of water, eliminating $45,400 in operating costs.

Agricultural Plastics Recycling Project  With support from the NC Tobacco Trust Fund Commission, WRP continues developing the NC Ag Plastics Recycling project program to help growers recycle plastics pots, trays, and hoop house films with a new focus on plastic mulch films in 2017-18. The program has assisted over 135 farms, created a resource website www.ncagplastics.org with 6,400 users, tracked >3,000 tons of agricultural plastics recycled in NC, a value to growers > $480,000 in avoided disposal and material revenues.

In partnership with NCSU Mountain Horticultural Research Station, the ag team conducted farm trials last fall to more efficiently and cleanly retrieve plastic mulch films using new pilot equipment. The trials showed a $100/acre labor savings, the team is working to facilitate new recycling processes for these contaminated films.
