Waste Reduction Partners is uniquely staffed with retired engineers, scientists, and staff who share their expertise with businesses and communities across North Carolina. As a multidisciplinary team of mechanical, electrical, civil, environmental, and chemical engineers, scientists, and architects, they have had distinguished careers in a variety of industries, such as automotive, food, textile, utility, chemical, paper, construction, aerospace, electronics, and government. This remarkable group has more than 2,200 years of cumulative experience.

Fourteen years in the furniture industry as a facility and environmental engineer and a year in the mining industry as a plant engineer.  Also worked nine years as a plant and process engineer in the converting industry and three years as a project engineer for the textile and nuclear industries.  Worked three years in sales and design to the polymer industry plus worked as a project engineer in the hydraulic hose, rope manufacture and other industries.

Education:

BET in Mechanical Engineering from UNCC, AAS from Central Piedmont Community College in mechanical drafting and design.  Also have Six Sigma Lean Green Belt training.

John performed many energy audits and energy retrofits for the US DOE Schools and Hospitals programs.  He has worked for many years as a mechanical engineer, designing HVAC systems for schools, universities, and hospitals.  These projects included design of boiler and chiller plants, custom air handling units, and green buildings.  He has also served on the North Carolina Energy Ad Hoc Committee for the NC Code Council.

Van Niekerk, Kimberly

Van Niekerk, Kimberly

Work History:

We wish to extend a warm welcome to Kimberly Van Niekerk as WRP’s new Energy Program Manager.

Kim has a strong energy and international background working in program and project management with Power Africa/USAID in South Africa and the Energy and Environment Partnership.  She has managed hundreds of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects across multiple countries.  Most recently, Kim has been working as a senior energy and environment consultant for Green Power Technologies in Virginia and NC on innovative renewable energy development projects. 

Russ will be transitioning his role with Kim over the next couple of weeks.  Ms. Van Niekerk lives in Asheville and will be working half-time from the Land of Sky Regional Council’s offices.  More information to follow for our energy team members.
